With the U.S. victory at the Presidents Cup, the best golf of '07 is in the rearview mirror
So, no more Tiger Woods for the next two and a half months. What's the golf/TV junkie to do?
Well, there's always Mike Weir.
Americans might not have enjoyed seeing Woods end his spectacular year by losing to Weir in the Presidents Cup, but Canada loved it. Weir beat Woods on the last hole of their singles match, though the U.S. had clinched the Cup by then.
The Canadian Press published a hole-by-hole account of the match, and some are saying it is the high point of the Canadian's career. International Captain Gary Player went so far as to say it was a life-changing victory.
The win inspired Weir, a captain's pick who many said didn't even belong on the team, to add a Florida tournament to his schedule. He'll be around through the end of the World Cup.
Woods won't. He won't play any competitive golf the rest of the year. That includes the PGA Grand Slam of Golf in Bermuda, Oct. 16 and 17. Woods dropped out of the event, saying he needs to help wife Elin change new baby Sam Alexis' diapers.
"We don't have nannies," Woods told the media.
The Bermuda people aren't saying it, but the foursome of Zach Johnson, Angel Cabrera, Paddy Harrington and Jim Furyk, Woods' replacement, doesn't have quite the same star appeal.
Tiger won't play for the next two and a half months, the longest break of his career. He isn't exactly a workhorse to begin with. Woods plays around 20 tournaments a year, fewer than most of his rivals, and even skipped a Fed Ex Cup playoff tournament. Then again, he doesn't need to play as many tournaments to be the richest athlete on the planet.
But fear not! There's always the PGA Tour's seven-event Fall Finish, where golf's lesser luminaries tee it up with a chance to win in the Tiger-less field.
There's the Valero Texas Open this week, and then the Frys.com Open, followed by the Frys Electronics Open. Then it's on to Florida, with the likes of the Ginn sur Mer Classic, the Children's Miracle Network Classic and ADT Skills Classic.
If that doesn't satisfy you, remember there's always the Wendy's 3-Tour challenge, the LG Skins Game, Merrill Lynch Shootout and the Target World Challenge.
Which is to say, see you in January.
As always, WorldGolf.com welcomes your comments.

The Heathland course at Legends Resort in Myrtle Beach is different than the resort's other two golf courses: a links-style layout dominates here, with wide open fairways and sloping greens. It's a player-friendly golf course that has more than its fair share of memorable holes, Brandon Tucker writes.
