Resort Overview

At the southernmost point of North Carolina’s magnificent chain of barrier islands and capes lies an island of singular beauty and extraordinary character. From its enviable position at the confluence of the Cape Fear River and Atlantic Ocean to the legendary Cape Fear itself, Bald Head Island is like nowhere else on earth.

Golf Overview

Ask a true golf aficionado what he or she loves about the game and you’ll likely hear a string of words that aptly describe the Bald Head Island Club course.

Absolutely. The bearer of a slope rating of 139 and a coveted 4-1/2-star rating from Golf Digest’s Places to Play, the Bald Head Island Club course has been heralded as one of the most challenging courses in the Carolinas.

From sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean to cozy pockets in the maritime forest and borders of marshes and lagoons, the scenery surrounding this course is sometimes considered an additional hazard because its beauty makes it difficult for players to keep their eyes on the ball.

Yes. Because while the course ranks rather high in degree of difficulty, it is very playable for the average golfer from the forward tees. If you’re the sort who doesn’t always play it safe, you’ll find the rewards of a well-hit shot in a lower score. The risks, of course, are equally consequential.

Perhaps more than anywhere else you’ve ever teed off, the Bald Head Island Club course brings nature into play. Designer George Cobb, who for 20 years was the lead consultant at Augusta National, carved out these 18 holes leaving much of the land the way he found it. It’s so undisturbed, in fact, many of the holes are still bordered by the natural habitats of herons, egrets, ibises, foxes and alligators.

Designed by the late George Cobb, the Bald Head Island course recalls the early days of golf course design when landscape architects allowed the land to reveal its own character, challenge and inspiration.

Description:
You tee off at the Bald Head Island Club with your back to the ocean, and you’re deep in the maritime forest by the time you reach holes five and six. The lush forest creates a cozy atmosphere on this pair of par fours, and you’re blissfully protected from the wind. Because the first half dozen holes are fairly straightforward, you may head into seven with a low score and a lot of confidence. While you leave the dense trees behind you, it’s clear you aren’t out of the woods just yet. The wind is almost always a formidable factor on the last three holes of the front nine.

A favorite among many regulars, seven is a high risk/reward hole–with the payoff being a birdie if you play the wind just right. However, if you go for the green in two and don’t make it, you may find yourself facing an entirely different sort of birdie in one of the island’s primary roosting sites for white ibises. The prevailing wind is right in your face on nine, one of the most difficult holes on the course. It’s a long par four with a small landing area, and it slopes right and left with lagoons on both sides. You’ll get a short break at the fairly benign ten and eleven, but beginning at twelve, you’ll have to mind your P’s and Q’s at the rest of the tees. Fourteen is a tricky read and a tough driving hole because the fairway slopes towards the water. You’ll dogleg right, and if you hit it over the hill, two live oaks come into play. The elevated green slopes front and back, so it can be difficult to hold. At eighteen you’re home free, where an exceptionally large green stretches out like an oversized welcome mat, inviting you into the clubhouse lounge where the drinks are cold and the stories are just beginning to heat up.

The golf couse at Bald Head Island is a long, mature course, offering a refreshing opportunity for golfers to experience the game the way it was originally intended to be played.
