Can we reach black golfers? May 6, 2008, 1:06 pm

by Stephen "Steve" M. Schmitt
It seems like the proper question should be: "Can we recruit young golfers?". There are male golfers. There are female golfers. What they have in common is that they are golfers. Color should be a non-issue.

To think that color is is a non-issue in golf is like saying racism in America is a figment of the imagination. This game that we all love and revere has been steeped in discrimination and racism. Incredibly talented men and women were historically victims of those issues...from Teddy Rhoades, Ed Spiller, Charlie Sifford to Tiger Woods. And for many of us who continue to be either uncomfortable or uncaring about discussions of race in American life, including sports, are part of the reasons that the problems continue. And it is an insult to those who have experienced discrimination and racism.

Thanks for the story. We continue to do everything we can through our foundation and golf tournament to reach as many african american golfers as we can. We provide a competitive event for them to place in addition to providing information regarding the history and legacy of the African-American Golf experience. Keeping my father's legacy(Ted Rhodes) alive is an important aspect of our event and foundation as well as providing opportunities for our young people is what we are striving to do.

When does the national white collegiate championship take place, Missed the dates and course?
Shocked?
Is this thinking not reverse-racist on the NCAA's part?
It is completely wrong and apples being apples, this tourney should be terminated or let any college or university in the country play in it.
Fair is fair...

No, it's not reverse racism on the part of the NCAA. And this is not "apples being apples" or "fair is fair", and it never has been. Your comments are illustrative of the phrase, "A mind is a terrible thing to waste". Before taking such a strong stance, I suggest that you become familiar (educated) with the true history of our game and the exclusionary policies that identified this game for so long. And as to the NCAA, it wasn't long ago that young black men and women were denied access to traditional, meaning predominately white, universities. And predominately black colleges were denied the opportunity to participate in post-season championships in all sports. This abomination continued until thru the 1950's. Thus the formation of organization such as the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics)...to give young men and women attending black colleges the chance participate in post-season play and win national championships. The NCAA refused to allow black colleges to compete. By the way, the PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championships has a tremendously diverse ethnic mix of young men and women from all over the United States, Africa, Europe, and South America attending "traditionally" black colleges. Meaning a number of the players are white...a far cry from the lack of diversity at the NCAA Championships, "the white collegiate championships". Mr.or Ms. B, a good education is a beautiful thing...among many of valuable benefits, it helps us get past our narrow-mindedness.

Yeah, I rather agree. What about attracting some white guys to play football or basketball in college. There don't seem to be many anymore.
