Lorena and the PGA March 14, 2008, 8:41 am

My understanding of golf is that one strikes the ball with the club and advances until the ball is in the cup. Whether male, female, or child of any gender, the game is played the same throughout the world. Why can't Lorena, todays premier female player in the world compete in PGA events? She drives long, is deadly accurate within 100 yds. and putts better than most of the guys on tour. We can take the "boys" from the Nationwide but no the female pros. Shame on those stoggy old establishment types who believe that it is still a GUYS ONLY sport. Open the doors for the future Ambassadors, whether male or female.

I just read Mike's post and it was well said. Comparing stats across tours is ridiculous, and is there really an audience that would watch the PGA vs LPGA? I for one would not. Why is it that this topic get's so much ink? Stick to your core competencies in writing about the each tours respective leaders, but cut the ascerbic rhetoric about girls playing against boys.

Great question Mark but the gender equity topic will always spark debate. That's why all media goes crazy when the chance to SPIN it comes up. One would think Michelle Wie was one Leadbetter lesson shy of winning the PGA Grand Slam by defeating Tiger in each major before 2008. The topic goes wild because so few people really understand how great the best 200 to 300 players in the world really are. I had friends tell me Wie would easily win PGA events, make the top 20 in the world (men) and be exempt on that tour before she graduated high school. Uhh, okay. The media knows what sells.

Lorena has Monday's off and many weeks free from her LPGA schedule. Why not Monday qualify like every other pro that's not exempt on the PGA tour? If you want to prove you're equal then qualify. I think that headline "Lorena earns spot at Monday qualifier" would speak volumes and be a great first step to "Lorena makes cut." Michelle Wie never dreamed of actually qualifying in a PGA event (except mostly feeble attempts through amateur events for a Masters spot as if she's Public Links eligible, PLEASE!) let alone qualifying for LPGA events prior to semi-earning her spots in LPGA events.
Comparing stats across tours is ridiculous. Course conditions are different. Why do you think Annika picked Colonial? The course better suited her game to compete against superior talent. If Lorena played a full season on the PGA tour she wouldn't be 170th in driving distance nor would she hit the same % of fairways or greens and other stats would suffer due to course set up.
Lorena is awesome and playing great right now (last year and a half). But hitting it 270 on 515 yard PAR 4's that have more narrow fairways, deeper rough just off those fairways, leading to greens that are usually harder, faster with tougher pin placements lead to different stats. The rough would wear her out over a season. Watch Tiger hack through the thick stuff. How would Lorena do that?
Earn a spot and show us what you can do. There is a separate tour for ladies because no women has ever shown the ability to compete in PGA events. That could change but handing out chances is not the route to take.

WOMEN March 9, 2008, 11:21 pm

Let women participate in their own LPGA tour. What do you want them to proof..............that they can play better than men.
If they want a challenge then make the golf course long just like in the PGA and they compare the score with that of the men to see where they stand.
Include them in mix events if they would like to play with men.
Next some wise guy mamy wantwomen to play basketball in the Mens' League. What next !!
I am Golfer ( Handicap 8 ) and love playing golf with wife 9 ( handicap 22 )in social game but not in competitions. Cheers.

I think she should definetely do it. Lorena is an excellent ambassador to world golf. She has all the tools; ball striking, length, hot putter and a genuine and humble spirit that the viewers will love. If she does do it I think the announcers should mention a little on the charity work she does for the poor in Mexico.

I must admit i'm not a golfer.I've tried it,watched it,practised it,but never been even good at it.I look at some one who plays the game well as i regard my doctor or dentist. In short i'd say this situation is perhaps a matter of equality.

With all her talent and ablility, Lorena could be aloof and a bit of a jerk. But, she seems quite friendly and even a bit humble. Rather like a female Tiger, she is the odds on bet to win every time she enters. I would like to see her take a crack at the PGA once...as Annika did. That was fun to watch.
And, if Wie is playing, I am not interested in seeing her make every boggie, etc. Show more Paula and Lorena and the others who can play.
