Orchards Golf Course
About
The Orchards Golf Club in Belleville offers an 18-hole championship course designed by Belleville native and former Masters winner Bob Goalby. With four sets of tees, the course appeals to a wide range of skill levels. The layout starts out with a gentler front nine where you won’t find any doglegs on the first six holes but as you move towards the back nine, the course gets more challenging. The golf course has an interesting and diverse mix of holes, with the seventh through the 14th being a particularly notable stretch. You’ll have to contend with abundant out-of-bounds and both water and sand come into play often. In addition to the golf course, the Orchards G.C. boasts a multi-level driving range as well as a large practice putting green with a sand bunker.

maintain your fairways
Why not rope off areas of dead grass on fairways, seed and water them, and eliminate the only complaint reviewers seem to have with The Orchards? I saw other parts in the back nine that were being watered in fairways puddles while these brown blotches needed the attention..The same guy who wanders around watering the greens could get a water truck and grow your fairways back to beauty.
The browned out areas, by the way, in no way, diminished the golf. Balls wouldn't stay on them and there are always "ways" to improve one's lie, if necessary.
Greens were excellent at moderate speeds and tough to get good reads. Lots of small creeks or buried pipes in front of green meant you had to carry to make the green. No rolling up, in general.
Plenty of space in most fairways. Longish par 3's and a monster closing hole..
Perfect day, We left just as the ladies league was pouring in. On Tueadays, make the tun before 4:00 pm. I liked this place and recommend it to play, but scold the minor maintenance needed to make it a wowsa.
Fairways in bad shape !
Used to play this course 10-15 years ago , have not played in a few years there , many of the fairways are in bad shape . Greens are slow but are in pretty good shape.Pace of play was slow due to a torney in front of us . We will not be back . The layout of the course is very good.
Typical Orchards Conditions
The Orchards is a reasonably challenging course (some small elevation changes here and there, narrow landing zones in some holes, forced carries on a few shots, etc.) where the greens are almost always in excellent shape (as they were for my July 4th round), pace of play is usually average or better (this time we were playing as a twosome behind a mom-and-pop twosome who were pretty slow sometimes) but which has always suffered (at least in the 8-10 times I've played it over a couple of decades) from spotty fairway conditions on more than a few holes.
We actually assumed the course had an inadequate irrigation system for many years until the pro advised us otherwise a while back. If he's right and the watering system is adequate for the course, then either management is penny-wise and pound foolish &or their groundskeeper is pretty horrible at his job. For just about 20 years this course has had many fairways - not all, but certainly most - that have many bare spots and dead grass during the peak growing season.
Heck there's a number of large farms and a giant "locally sourced" fruit stand in the area, growing grass on the fairways should be an absolute no-brainer. They certainly seem to be able to accomplish it in the roughs, even in the shade.
I don't want to over-sell that complaint, though - even with all the patchy fairways, the course is very playable and using Golf Now you can play it at a very reasonable price.
Rough condition
Course appears to be trying to get renovate fairways and they are going about it very slowly. Lots of bare areas in fairways. Greens in good condition, but long grass makes them very slow.Layout is very nice. Some fairways are tight, but most are pretty open. No gimmicky here.
The Orchards
Had a great time with my son on this nice course. Only issue we has were some of the fairways but the greens were awesome and course is challenging for sure to our game . I will definitely be back
set back by league play
tee off time was 2 pm. was not informed about a ladies league beginning at 4. I had to wait at the turn for 1.5 hours before I got to finish playing the back nine. I started a 2 pm and finished at 7:10.
Good but...
The course could be in way better condition and the green fees are steep for the location and quality.
Very impressed
I was a little weary playing here after reading some past reviews but figured I would give it a shot. I was very impressed with the course considering my low expectations. The fairways were in pretty bad shape considering its been golf season for over a month now. However, the tee boxes were great and the greens were in spectacular condition. A couple of challenging holes but also a few shorter par 4s that helped lower my score. The pace of play was great until we hit a couple of groups on the back 9, which slowed it down significantly. I will definitely be back.
Great Experience
Course is in great shape this year and was very surprised as to the quality of the greens compared to last year. Will definitely be back again
Return customer
I enjoy playing this course. The first 6 holes blend together. They are fairly wide open. 7-18 are fairly similar. They are fairly narrow with an exception or two. Couple of the tee boxes were a little shaggy. The greens were a little challenging with some of the bunkers around them. Other than that not bad.
Slow
Log jam on the weekend. Lots of old people and not the kind that play very often. The worst kind. 'Get directions' feature on Golf Now app also sent us to the wrong place.
Great course transformation!!
It has been a couple years since I played here, because the last time there the course was not in good shape. But the changes the course leadership have made are excellent and obvious. The holes they cleared out around and the greens that were redone looked great. Hope they keep up the great job.
This course the best hotdogs of all the courses in the area.
The greens & tee boxes were in really nice shape. The fairways are in really need of some work. Overall all the course has always been a great place to play because of the layout. The staff is really friendly and helpful. The pace of play was nice.
great value
went on a beautiful 70 degree day excellent course conditions and the pace of play was great everyone seems to stay in sync with one another not any wait time
Great day to start the season!
Have not been plating due to winter weather, this was a perfect day. I gave the course conditions a average rating due to the first thaw has made the course rather sloppy. Ice and snow here and there. Ponds still frozen, some greens still shaded and hard, even a frozen cup! Will be back again!
A great value
A very enjoyable course with a brutal finishing hole. I rechecked the card to see if it was one of those rare par six's but unfortunately was not. I live in West County St. Louis and it was worth the long drive there.
The course was in better shape this year with the redone holes then in prior years.
The course was in good shape. The greens were in excellet shape. They rolled true and while we started off in mid-day, you could tell some one was fixing the ball marks continously. The fairway grass was going dormant, but was good and the other grass was being cut.
Limited play
Too bad GolfNow didn't note that only the back 9 was open. The front 9 was under repair to aerate the greens
This course was enjoyabel to play and I like the narrow fairways with tree lines
I would suggest some signage from hole 9 to 10 and to the club house from 18. Looking forward to going back!
Too many bookings scheduled at one time.
We enjoyed the course but did not enjoy having to wait so long because tee times were scheduled at once.
