Private in name only, Scotland's Prestwick Club is an anachronistic preserve of egalitarian golf and dining. Beyond the traditionally quirky links golf, Prestwick's clubhouse - one of the oldest in existence - welcomes visitors as if they were regulars, and provides as memorable a meal as you're ever likely to have. Scottish golf course designer David McLay Kidd's newest effort, Machrihanish Dunes Golf Club, is getting poor reviews from WorldGolf.com readers. It's too difficult, they say, full of enough blind shots to drive a golfer crazy. "This course just doesn't cut it," one reader said.

Turnberry Resort's crown jewel is the famous Ailsa Course, a regular Open Championship host and considered one of the most scenic links in Britain. It's also synonymous with one of golf's most famous matches, the "Duel in the Sun" between Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson at the 1977 Open, when Watson won by a stroke.
