Located in the town of Markinch, near Glenrothes is Balbirnie Park Golf Club. The parkland course is set in 140 acres of thick woodland and measures 6,200 yards from the back tees.
All three par 5s play less than 500 yards and the green can be reached with two solid shots when the wind isn't howling. The par 3s play between 150 and 200 yards.
The club opened in 1983 and has hosted several PGA events including the Scottish Assistants Championship. The course is hilly and a difficult test for skilled golfers.
The course starts off with three mid-length par 4s, each between 320-290 yards. The fourth, called "Cadham Woods," is the first par 3 on the course and is 189 yards.
A 285-yard par 4 follows then the front nine's only par 5, "Sweetbank," comes next. It's only 469 yards and easily reachable in two if there's no wind in your face.
The back nine has two par 5s both under 500 yards as well. All the par 4s are less than 400 yards except "The Kennels," the 15th, which is 402 yards.
Weekday greens fees at Balbirnie Park cost 35 pounds. Weekends have limited play, so call in advance. Day tickets are not available.
The pro shop was recently expanded in 1998 and has one of the finest selections of equipment and apparel in the Fife market. The club is located off A92 Dundee Road heading north. Turn right just past the next junction posted "Markinch."
