Resort Overview

The American Club, the Midwest's only AAA Five Diamond Resort Hotel provides country elegance in the charming Village of Kohler, less than an hour north of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The resort offers a host of diversions year-round, including award-winning golf courses Blackwolf Run and Whistling Straits; the Kohler Waters Spa; and special events such as the Kohler Food & Wine Experience, Christmas Kohler and a Spring Garden Market.

Golf Overview

Guests at the distinguished American Club enjoy the special opportunity to play the breathtaking golf courses at Blackwolf Run and Whistling Straits.

Blackwolf Run, built on a tract of land sculpted by glacier run-off tens of thousands of years ago, offers an award-winning 36 holes of championship golf in Kohler, Wisconsin. Its two 18-hole courses have been skillfully carved out of the natural environment and are designed for golfers who appreciate the game's great traditions. Both courses at Blackwolf Run, the River Course and the Meadow Valleys Course, were designed by renowned course architect Pete Dye and given names to reflect the natural features of the terrain. Seeing the proposed tract of land for Blackwolf Run for the first time, Dye said, "There could not be a better natural setting for golf."

Whistling Straits, which opened in 1998, offers two courses of dynamic contrast. Open, rugged and windswept terrain defines the Straits Course sculpted along two miles of Lake Michigan shoreline. Just inland, interspersed by four meandering streams, the grassland-and-dunes aspect of the Irish Course is a deceivingly tranquil landscape. In 1999, its first year of eligibility, the Straits Course was ranked 67th on Golf Magazine’s prestigious list of the "Top 100 Courses in the World". The same magazine placed Straits 35th among the "Top 100 Courses in the U.S." (Sept. 1999).

River Course at Blackwolf Run

Architect:  Pete Dye
Description:
The River Course at Blackwolf Run is a commanding layout that offers a dynamic golf challenge with sweeping panoramic views of the Sheboygan River valley. A glacier served as early landscape architect for this site, sculpting river valleys with deep ravines, meadow plains, gentle rolling hills and abundant lakes. Ten thousand years later, Pete Dye took this same piece of land, added his signature style and designed one of the best golf courses in America.

Meadow Valleys Course at Blackwolf Run

Architect:  Pete Dye
Description:
Created by world-renowned golf course designer Pete Dye, the Meadow Valleys course at Blackwolf Run in Kohler, WI, offers an exciting challenge to the amateur golfer and a dramatic dare to the professional. The opening nine, set on gently rolling terrain, is reminiscent of Scottish links courses; the concluding nine shows the influence of glacial carving of the land, with deep ravines bordering a river valley.

Straits Course at Whistling Straits

Architects:  Alice, Pete &
P.B. Dye
Description:
Perhaps more than any other course in North America the Straits Course at Whistling Straits was designed as homage to the grand origins of golf. The 18-hole course was created by famed golf course designer Pete Dye in the style of the legendary seaside links of the British Isles. Located nine miles northeast of Kohler, Wis., Straits earned early acclaim both for its stunning layout that stretches along two miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, and for its traditional influences, it is a walking course only and has caddies as well (required before twilight).

The young course has already been selected by the PGA of America to host the 2004 PGA Championship, one of golf's "four majors", after having been open only two seasons.

Irish Course at Whistling Straits

Architect:  Pete Dye
Description:
The Irish Course completes 72 holes of the most diverse golf experience in the world. The course is another Pete Dye masterpiece and a perfect companion to the adjacent, stunning Straits Course. Tranquil grasslands. Soaring dunes. Cavernous bunkers. And, to ensure that golfers will remember the Irish Course, Dye claims he has used "every trick I've ever learned" in routing and sculpting the hole dynamics. Capitalizing on the endlessly fickle personality of nearby Lake Michigan, the Irish Course offers intriguing prospects at every turn. Carry the creek or lay up short from the tee on #9. Steer clear of the 40-foot bunkers on the right or fall victim to the wetlands on the left of the "blind" par three at #13.
