Dining

Complete your visit with a memorable dining experience in one of our 18th-Century Taverns, staffed by costumed servers. Enjoy fine dining or family meals in contemporary restaurants, too.

The King's Arms Tavern 18th-Century Style Chop House

Now serving Sally Lunn Bread, Game Pye, and Virginia’s upper crust. This genteel colonial tavern catered to Virginia’s gentry and the politically influential before, during, and after the Revolution, and was known as the restaurant where the elite meet and eat. The atmosphere at our premier tavern is one of simple elegance as befitting statesmen and gentry who often dined there.

Those who dine at King’s Arms Tavern will have such entrees as Roast Prime Rib of Beef, Cavalier’s Lamb, Seared Pumpkin-Crusted Salmon, or the ever-popular Mrs. Vobe’s Tavern Dinner that includes Peanut Soup, Honey and cider-cured Smithfield Pork Porterhouse and Williamsburg Pecan Pie, from which to choose.

Shields Tavern

In the early 18th century, Shields Tavern was a popular spot for the colony’s middling sort and lower gentry. Today, the outspoken Mr. Shields invites his guests into a restaurant that faithfully recaptures the experience of dining in the 1750s. The tavern’s warm and rustic interior is historically accurate, the balladeers treat you to a tune and much of the menu is based on authentic recipes.

Mr. Shields is proud to present a unique Colonial dining experience you won’t forget, James Shields’ Cook’s Bountiful Selections. Make sure you ask for seconds or perhaps thirds – no one can go away hungry. Mr. Shields won’t allow it!

The menus at Shields reflect seasonal changes, incorporating the finest ingredients available. Items range from a smoked duck and sausage gumbo to stuffed veal collops braised in red wine. Finish off a meal with pumpkin bread pudding or a syllabub, an 18th-century dessert-style drink.

Chowning's

From 11:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily, Chowning’s casual menu emphasizes quick fare, freshly prepared items such as pulled pork BBQ sandwiches, beef brisket sandwiches, and Smithfield ham and Gloucester cheese on a pretzel roll – along with snack items, a new Christiana's ice cream sandwich, our Brick House brownie, and other assorted quick refreshments. Food is available from the new cider stand or from our garden bar located behind the tavern, facing Market Square, allowing guests to quickly return to the day's programs and pursuits. Seating under the grape arbor or inside the tavern.

Daily at 5:00 p.m., Chowning's becomes a true 18th-century rum and ale house adapted for family enjoyment, serving light fare, local ales and wines, rums, and Colonial Williamsburg's own draft root beer and ginger ale. Gambol's – a lively nighttime program that has been presented for 25 years at Chowning's – has been expanded to operate throughout the evening. Balladeers rouse guests in period sing-alongs, and costumed servers play popular games of the day. Family entertainment is the rule between 5 and 8 p.m. From 8 p.m. until closing, Chowning’s caters to a more mature audience.

Christiana Campbell's Tavern

This historic tavern, George Washington’s personal favorite, offers such seafood specialties as: Sherried Crab Stew, Crab Cakes, Sea Pye (a dish of crab, fin fish, shrimp, lobster and cream), Gloucester Chicken, and Beef Filet and Buttered Shrimp. The entrees are complemented by long-time tavern favorites: Campbell’s Cabbage Slaw, Spoon Bread and Sweet Potato Muffins.

Williamsburg Inn Regency Room

Savor distinctive food and wines in an atmosphere of graceful elegance in the renowned Regency Room. Our dinner menu offers a distinct selection of favorites including tomato-rosemary ravioli with smoked duck contit, sweet lobster bisque and roasted domestic lamb loin and oxtail rillettes, and classics such as Chateaubriand and the Williamsburg Inn crab cake. Complement your meal with the perfect wine from our wine list, named an Award of Excellence winner by "The Wine Spectator" magazine.

Open daily. Sunday brunch offers a wonderful appetizer and dessert display, scrumptious entrees carefully prepared in the kitchen, champagne and live music-a very special occasion. Live music also accompanies dinner every evening and dancing is offered Friday and Saturday nights.
