Resort Overview
Since 1766, The Homestead has offered visitors an incomparable retreat; an incredibly grand escape, located amidst the beauty of Virginia's Allegheny Mountains. When you visit, you will find luxuriously appointed rooms and suites, superb dining and exquisite shopping, in addition to traditional Southern hospitality in a gracious atmosphere. Golf Overview
The year was 1892. The United States Golf Association and the U.S. Open were still three years in the future. And persimmon wood clubs and gutta-percha balls were high-tech equipment. This was the year that the historic game of golf was introduced to The Homestead. Today, this Grande Dame of American resorts boasts three challenging courses, each with its own distinctive merits. Golf Courses
The Cascades Course at The Homestead
Architect: William S. FlynnDescription:
Consistently ranked among Golf Digest's and Golf Magazine's top fifty courses, this William S. Flynn design is touted as the finest mountain course in America. It is best said that Flynn's design uses its mountain location to influence play, but not to dictate it. Therefore, talented players can use the slopes and roll to their advantage, but less skilled golfers will not find themselves penalized by forced carries or unfair hazard placement.

The Lower Cascades Course at The Homestead
Architect: Robert Trent Jones, Sr.Description:
The waters rushing through the Lower Cascades Course widen into a peaceful stream at the valley floor. Don't let this lull you into a false sense of confidence on the Lower Cascades.
Built by Robert Trent Jones in 1963, it features Jones' trademark runway tee boxes and wide-open fairways. Jones also included severe green contouring with exaggerated breaks, and strategically placed bunkers for a competitive game. The Lower Cascades has hosted U.S. Men's Amateur qualifying rounds and is the site of the American Junior Golf Association ClubCorp Championship.

The Old Course at The Homestead
Architect: Donald RossDescription:
The Old Course has the oldest first tee in continuous use in the U.S. In 1892 it was part of a six-hole layout. By 1913 the course had been enlarged to 18 holes and had taken its place as one of Donald Ross's original designs. Under the direction of Rees Jones, a more than one-million-dollar redesign has recently been performed on the Old Course, to preserve the essential flair and enhance the traditionally favorite characteristics.
