Resort Overview

When Joe and Josie Ruttger founded Ruttger's Bay Lake Lodge in 1898, home cooking and good fishing were the primary draws. Guests paid $5 a week for bed, board, and boat. Family members cleaned fish, repaired roofs, and farmed the surrounding 40 acres. A Century has now passed, and much has changed. Yet the Ruttger tradition of hospitality, recreation, and family ownership remains unchanged.

Golf Overview

Since 1921, when it was first introduced, golf has been an important part of Ruttger's Bay Lake Lodge. The Lakes, our 18-hole Championship course, was designed by Joel Goldstrand. With two natural lakes, water is a factor on ten holes. Carved from 100 acres of rugged north-woods terrain, each hole will offer you a challenge as well as the beauty of northern Minnesota. You will also enjoy our Alec's Nine course.

Alec's Nine Golf Course

Architect:  James Dalgleish
Description:
In the winter of 1920 - 21, Zig (Haas Ziegler) visited California. When he returned, he told of a new game called golf and talked Alec into converting the pasture into a golf course. Cows and horses mowed the grass. This venerable old course was opened in 1921. It grew from the original four-hole, sand-green layout to this sporty par 34 course.

Dining

Ruttger's Bay Lake Lodge is known for it's food! Mealtime is always the highlight of a Ruttger stay - we have received rave reviews for nearly a century. Delicious buffets, lakeside barbecues, and menus that include a variety of fine entrees are all served with our proud tradition in mind. Our chefs use only the freshest ingredients available. Special dietary requirements will be handled capably by our kitchen staff.

Zig's for Casual Dining & Drinks is the latest addition to Ruttger's Bay Lake Lodge, but already has a long and rich history. Zig's is named after Haas "Zig" Ziegler, who was responsible for the development of the nine-hole golf course at Ruttger's in 1921. Zig convinced Alec Ruttger that a golf course would be a great attraction to offer his guests when the fishing on Bay Lake was slow.

Zig's features a variety of appetizers, soups, salads, pastas, steaks, and desserts as well as beautiful views of the golf course and Bass Lake. Guests can enjoy the fine food and scenery from the balcony which surrounds the restaurant.
