Golf Overview

Words and pictures fail to fully describe legendary Sea Island golf. Only through personal experience is it possible to understand how history, tradition and topography have converged to create this golfers' paradise.

Deeper than the stunningly beautiful greens and fairways is a rich genealogy tracing back more than 70 years, when course design masters of that era conceived the original links of the Sea Island Golf Club, drawing their inspiration from industry meccas like St. Andrews. Over time, new champions and modern tastes have had their influence on the evolution of our courses, but never at the expense of the aura that golf traditionalists hold dear.

Our passion for excellence has earned us the industry's highest accolades, including Golf Digest's lists of "America's Best 100 Golf Courses" and "America's 75 Best Resort Courses," as well as Golf Magazine's "Gold Medal" and "America's 100 Best Golf Holes." Besides offering the exhilaration of sport, our courses are known for their natural beauty and breathtaking panoramas of Coastal Georgia. A day on one of our courses is one you'll never forget.

Caddies are a time-honored tradition at Sea Island, but carts are also available for your comfort. Our full-service Golf Shop ensures you'll never want for anything… here you'll find the latest equipment and accessories, including club rental and custom club crafting, regripping and fitting — and, for resort guests, club cleaning and storage.

Golf Courses

Seaside Course at Sea Island Golf Club

Architects:  H. S. Colt &
C. H. Alison
Description:
Seventy years of history enrich this soil that crosses generations of golf greats: Bobby Jones, Sam Snead, Davis Love III. It began as the Seaside Nine, built by Colt & Alison in the 1920s. In 1930, Robert Tyre "Bobby" Jones called it "one of the best nine holes I've ever seen." Now it's been recreated as the new 18-hole Seaside Course, skillfully achieved by architect Tom Fazio. His vision: honor the tradition and integrity of the original design, yet carve a completely original, challenging and contemporary layout. He masterfully succeeded. Seaside is a rare gem.

Here, beauty takes on an effortless quality. Tidal creeks, saltmarshes and St. Simon's Sound frame the course. Ancient oaks and cedars, white sandy dunes and native grasses add contrast to the perfectly manicured fairways and greens. The ocean breezes and waterfront layout soothe the soul.

It's clear this architect understands the magic of nature; he elevated many of the tee boxes to give you a better view of the surroundings. Bless him.

Plantation Course at Sea Island Golf Club

Architect:  Walter Travis
Description:
Its 'grandfather' was the Plantation Nine, and it set the course for Sea Island's reputation for fine golfing. Walter Travis graced the area with this acclaimed design in 1927. Patronage grew. And a complementary companion — Dick Wilson's Retreat Nine — opened to help keep up with demand.

In 1998, Rees Jones presented us with a brilliantly reshaped marriage of these two classics, creating The Plantation Course — a golfers' utopia certain to enrapture the most boldly confident player as well as the novice.

Natural beauty abounds. Liberal sight lines between holes give it a parkland feel. Breathtaking ocean views...ancient live oaks...lakes...flower-studded landscapes...are brought together artfully on the architect's canvas of fairways and greens. You're in for a treat.

Retreat Course at Sea Island Golf Club

Architect:  Davis Love III
Description:
From childhood, he grew up sketching challenging bunkers and verdant fairways. Now Davis Love III, our resident PGA Touring Professional, brings his vision to life, gracing our island with some of his finest design work — the remaking of our Retreat Course.

A course built by a champion, fit for a pro, yet comfortable enough for the leisure player. In true Love fashion, the design is traditional, adorned by landscaping that fits its environment like a well-tailored suit...nothing fussy or overstated. In fact, the colossal 14,000 square foot green on Number 6 suggests a playful sense of humor.
