Cincinnati: An under-appreciated golf town
CINCINNATI -- The home of the Bengals and Reds just might be Ohio's best golf destination. Serious elevation changes throughout the Ohio Valley make for dynamic golf. The area surrounding this city is essentially a giant bowl with downtown as the bottom.
Fun public golf courses line the hilly perimeter on all sides. Northwest of the city are Deer Run Country Club and Aston Oaks, a Jack Nicklaus layout with a pair of scenic par 5s.
Southwest heading into Indiana is Belterra, a casino resort course in Florence designed by Tom Fazio.
The thickest concentration of must-play courses is northeast of the city, headlined by Shaker Run Golf Club, where the original 18 by Arthur Hills will blow you away. Places like Heatherwood, Beckett Ridge, Crooked Tree and the historic Grizzly course at the Golf Center at Kings Island feature plenty of redeeming qualities, too. The Grizzly course has a long tournament history over four decades, hosting the PGA Tour, Senior PGA Tour, the LPGA Tour and the Symetra Futures Tour.
Two great tracks sit southeast of downtown: Legendary Run and Elks Run, a Greg Norman design making a serious comeback under a new management company.
If the constant struggles of the Bengals and Reds leave you blue, hit the greens of greater Cincinnati for a pick-me-up.
