KAMLOOPS, B.C., Canada - Named the best new golf course in Canada in 2008, Tobiano is both intimidating and stunning.
Perched above the Kamloops Lake in the Thompson-Okanagan region of British Columbia, this Thomas McBroom design resembles a moonscape with turf. With a desert-type setting, Tobiano winds around arroyos and sand dunes, dotted by cacti and sagebrush.
Tobiano features flawless bentgrass greens, which McBroom characterizes as "infinity" greens because they look as if they're suspended in mid-air from certain angles.
The golf course can play difficult for anyone who sprays the ball, but five sets of tees - from 5,358 yards to 7,367 - make it adaptable for most any handicap. Fortunately, the local rule allows for lost balls in the desert to be played as lateral hazards with some generous drop areas on a few holes.
