VALENTINE, Neb. -- Architects Tom Lehman and Chris Brands created everything on a grand scale on the Dunes Course at The Prairie Club.
The vast landscape of central Nebraska's Sandhills provides the perfect backdrop for their massive fairways, natural blown-out bunkers and sinister greens that ripple and wave in the dunes. The irony of it all is you can't see anything for miles, but there's still so much visually to digest.
The course, which opened in 2010, ranks No. 78 on Golf Magazine's top 100 public courses in the country. Multiple tee boxes create angles and options galore on this sprawling 7,583-yard par-73 design. Hitting the fairway isn't ever a problem, but poorly positioned tee shots still get punished with blind shots over ridges or deep cavernous sand traps dug from the ground.
Virtually treeless and without a single water hazard or forced carry, the Dunes Course plays like a coastal links with firm-and-fast conditions and a constant breeze. Head Professional Patrick Kilbride estimates the wind blows an average of 20 mph every day. No wonder the Dunes Course tends to blow golfers away, literally and aesthetically.
