The Pete Dye course at Colleton River Plantation Club in Bluffton, S.C. near Hilton Head Island is one of two private golf courses in the community, coupled with a Jack Nicklaus design as well.
The Dye course is stunning. It plays through thick, lowcountry forest, then on the back nine, along open scenic wetlands and lakes. It's a somewhat gentle design for Dye standards, who is known for building some of the most challenging courses in the world. But from the back tees it's still a 74.0 rating and 6,907 yards.
Dye himself calls his effort at Colleton River "the best course I've ever built." That is debatable for golfers who have seen his finest courses from coast to coast, but there is no denying Colleton River's placement among his very best in terms of scenery and playability.
