Heath Slocum wins The Barclays at Liberty National: Round 1 of the 2009 FedEx Cup playoffs

At The Barclays, the first event of the PGA Tour's 2009 FedEx Cup playoffs, Heath Slocum sank his seven-meter par putt on the final hole for a one-shot win. Liberty National Golf Course in Jersey City, N.J. hosted the tournament this year. Slocum was trailed closely in the final round, but his success on the last hole prevented a playoff that would have included Tiger Woods, Ernie Els, Padraig Harrington, and Steve Stricker.

In the final round, Slocum and Steve Marino were in the lead with Tiger Woods trailing by four strokes. It remained close throughout the round but Slocum managed to take the win on the last hole. Marino faltered during the round and ended the tournament tying for 15th.

Slocum shot a 4-under 67 that day, giving him a final score of 9-under 275 for the tournament. Ernie Els from South Africa, Padraig Harrington from Ireland, Tiger Woods, and Steve Stricker all tied for second place with 8-under 276. Nick Watney and Frederik Jacobson tied for sixth with 7-under 277.

With his victory at this tournament, Slocum went from 124th on FedEx Cup points list to third, just behind Woods and Stricker.
