Cross the "Mackinac Bridge" at Tanglewood Golf Course in metro Detroit
SOUTH LYON, Mich. -- The famous Mackinac Bridge leading to Michigan's Upper Peninsula is a good five-hour drive from metro Detroit. Golfers don't have to work so hard to find it. There's a mini-version of the suspension bridge behind the sixth green on the West nine at Tanglewood Golf Course.
What golfers don't see is the green complex looks like the glove-shaped Lower Peninsula from the air. The scene is just one of the subtle touches that make this 27-hole facility one of finest -- and most unique -- public courses in metro Detroit.
Tanglewood, which is tucked inside a large subdivision, always delivers consistently good conditions and a solid Bill Newcomb layout that can be taken advantage of in spots. The North nine and the South nine opened in 1991 with the West nine, which features more trees and tighter corridors, following in 1995.
Tanglewood Head Professional Brad Stedry likes the South/West combination the best, but he also thinks the sixth hole on the North nine -- a dangerous par 3 over water -- remains the layout's best hole.
"That green, without being tricky or stupid, it is a monster," Stedry said.
