Tom Doak's Blue Course at Streamsong golf resort in central Florida will leave a lasting impression
STREAMSONG, Fla. -- Architect Tom Doak, of Renaissance Golf Design, never knew such majestic sand dunes existed in remote central Florida until he first toured the land that would become the Streamsong golf resort.
"Florida would have been about my 47th guess for what state we were in," Doak said at the Streamsong grand opening Jan. 26, 2013. "It's been a thrill to work with a site like this." Streamsong sits in Polk County on approximately 16,000 acres of land mined by the Mosaic Company, about 27 miles south of Lakeland and 85 miles from Orlando.
Everything about Streamsong's Blue Course, which plays 7,176 yards, feels grand in scale, from its bold bunkering to the panoramic vista off the elevated first tee. Firm and fast fairways spill in all directions, intertwined with the ">Red Course by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw.
Gigantic greens -- slick with MiniVerde Ultra Dwarf Bermudagrass -- remain open in front, allowing run-up shots. They're easy to hit yet hard to solve with the flat stick, even with a caddie. It takes a bridge -- and a great shot over water -- to reach the seventh green, a signature par-3 sunken into the dunes. Long a proponent of drivable par 4s, Doak's daunting, 312-yard 13th hole can relinquish eagle or triple.
The "bye hole" by Doak plays over water as a short par 3 near the putting green and clubhouse. Twelve rooms in the ultra-chic clubhouse, designed by Alfonso Architects, will accommodate guests until the 216-room luxury lodge opens in the fall of 2013.
