Shawnee Inn & Golf Resort in Shawnee on Delaware, Pennsylvania
SHAWNEE ON DELAWARE, Pa. - Designed by A.W. Tillinghast before the famous golf course designer was really an architect, the golf course at Shawnee Inn & Golf Resort is a journey to the past in a naturally beautiful setting.
The golf course has been the playground of celebrities such as Jackie Gleason and Mickey Mantle as well as President Eisenhower. It hosted the 1938 PGA Championship when resident pro Sam Snead was defeated by Paul Runyan. (It was match play back then.)
Tillinghast designed the original 18 holes, which opened in 1911. In 1963, Bill Diddle added another nine holes, although they are interspersed throughout the original layout. A plan to restore the course to the 18 holes as they were in the 1938 PGA is being explored.
Today there are three nine-hole layouts at Shawnee Inn & Golf Resort, the Red, White and Blue. All but three holes are on an island formed by the Delaware River, making for some dramatic holes alongside and over the river. There's also a portable bridge that was built decades ago. It was designed by former owner C.C. Worthington. Each year, the bridge is removed after the season, and it's reassembled in the spring.
