ST. KITTS -- It took a cold-weather Canadian to transform an underwhelming Caribbean golf course into a club worthy of its name.
In 2003, Thomas McBroom redesigned the old Frigate Bay Golf Club built in 1976 by five-time British Open champion Peter Thomson into the Royal St. Kitts Golf Club. McBroom stretched the layout to 6,851 yards with nine new holes, including six on the back nine.
This vastly underrated club isn't ranked among the top 50 golf courses in the Caribbean and Mexico by Golfweek, but it should be. Both nines feature strong waterlogged par 5s and interesting risk-reward, drivable par 4s.
The front nine plays in the shadows of colorful homes that dot the hillside. It's the dynamic 14th where sensory overload takes over. The elevated green of this drivable par 4 is protected by severe slopes back to front. Looking back from this lofty perch, the ocean waves crash in the distance. Over the hill, the views from the elevated tees of the par-3 15th showcase McBroom's creativity. He stacked bunkers on either side of the green below to mimic the lapping ocean waves. It's gorgeous. The par-4 16th and 17th holes play directly along the shore. It's a dynamite finish.
One day, there will be more golf on St. Kitts, but for now, this place is the king of the island.
