From Rodriguez to Ishikawa, the best of golf courses, resorts and travel to Puerto Rico in pictures
Puerto Rico can make a strong argument as one of the Caribbean's best golf destinations.
The island has more than 20 golf courses -- 17 that are championship-caliber. It's also home to a rare PGA Tour stop outside the U.S. mainland, the Puerto Rico Open at the Trump International Golf Club.
Chi Chi Rodriguez, the island's only golfer to have success on the PGA Tour, remains an island icon and a regular fixture of the golf scene here. Rodriguez spends plenty of time mentoring young golfers at Trump International as well as the Dorado Beach Resort, a complex founded by Laurance Rockefeller back in the 1950s.
Located to the west of Old San Juan, Dorado Beach Resort home to four golf courses, including the revamped East Course. Rodriguez also once served as the head professional at Rio Mar Country Club, which is now part of the Wyndham Rio Mar and features two golf courses, including the original Ocean Course designed by Tom and George Fazio. Just to the east, El Conquistador Golf Club is one of the island's more rough-and-tumble layouts, set on lush hillsides overlooking the sea.
Located beside Trump International is Bahia Beach Golf Club, which opened in 2008 and is part of a St. Regis Resort. The course, designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., plays through dense, seaside forest and lagoons before finishing with three dramatic holes beside the ocean. But the most dramatic course on the island may be the newest. Located on the northwest side of the island, Royal Isabela is an exclusive club with a small amount of accommodations that feature one of the most ambitious golf designs in the Caribbean, including a back nine that plays on bluffs overlooking the sea.
