Puakea Golf Course is located in the heart of Lihue, Kauai's biggest town of about 10,000 people and just minutes from the airport.
The story how Puakea came to be is an interesting one. During construction of the golf course in 1992, Hurricane Iniki came through and wreaked havoc on the island. Only 10 holes were completed, and because of economic problems on the island, the remaining holes were never finished.
That is until 2003, when new ownership came in and brought local architect Robin Nelson to finish the job. The result is two generations of holes, the first of which is featured on the most scenic property at the foot of the mountains. The latter half, consisting mostly of the front nine, plays closer to town.
Don't let the double wide and first couple holes set just off the street fool you, Puakea gets better and better as the round progresses.
Puakea Golf Course is located just a few minutes from the Kauai Lagoons Resort & Beach Club and serves as a worthy and convenient second option.
