MEADOWS OF DAN, Va. -- Donald Steel has designed nearly 80 courses around the world and worked on every course in the British Open rota, but even he was taken aback when he first saw the property for the Highland Course at Primland Resort.
It was the most difficult and technical site the noted British architect has ever worked on but also the most beautiful, set high atop the Blue Ridge Mountains. Steel's unique routing of 7,053 yards comes from what the rugged terrain gave him, not what he imposed upon it. Steel found five par 5s and five par 3s, an interesting twist for the layout, especially the par 5, par 3, par 5, par 3 start to the day.
The Highland Course -- ranked No. 1 in the state and No. 13 nationally among public courses by Golf Digest -- plays difficult. There's no margin for error along its edges. Errant shots disappear quickly in the fescue grasses and trees, and they fall off ridges that appear bottomless.
Three-putting Steel's mammoth greens only adds insult to injury on the score card, but even golfers having a bad day won't feel too down on their luck. The gorgeous, natural setting and soaring views of Mother Nature tend to sooth the pain. The course might play hard to get, but it's worth chasing every time.
