VALENTINE, Neb. - Is The Prairie Club worth the effort to find? That's the question hanging over the club's proverbial future like a guillotine. You'd be hard-pressed to find anybody who has made the trek to say no.
The club delivers such an intimate, unique experience just south of the South Dakota border in Nebraska's Sandhills. The nearest airport is in tiny North Platte, Neb., more than two hours away.
The two golf courses opened in 2010 feel pure and undisturbed, like they've been waiting to be played for decades.
The Dunes course, designed by Tom Lehman and Chris Brands, sweeps across the plains in grand fashion with fairways and bunkers among the biggest in the game. The Pines course by Graham Marsh rolls through the open sandhills and explores the pines near the cliffs of the Snake River Canyon.
Gil Hanse has a layout called "Old School" on the drawing board that will better utilize the canyon's scenery. Head Professional Patrick Kilbride said construction will start once the club reaches 400 members (it's at 330 currently.)
The Horse Course, a short course designed by Hanse, rivals the best par-3 layouts in golf. The 31-room lodge and four cabins provide cozy accommodations. A visit isn't complete without ordering a rib-eye for a taste of Nebraska's best beef.
