With the Catalina course at Omni Tucson National, Von Hagge and Devlin bring classic parkland golf to Arizona
TUCSON, Ariz. -- Omni Tucson National Resort's Catalina course is an area institution, built in the 1960s and host to more than 30 Tucson Chrysler Classics. Designed by Robert Von Hagge and Bruce Devlin, the golf course is a mostly flat, walker-friendly layout, though only members are allowed to walk.
Contrary to the newer desert golf courses in Tucson, Catalina is a traditional parkland design with tall trees and eight lakes. It's also notorious for one of the PGA Tour's toughest finishing holes, a 443-yard par 4 with water on each side of the fairway and an elevated, well protected green. The golf course still hosts a collegiate event every year and plays over 7,200 yards as a par 73.
Omni Tucson National Resort is also home to the new Tucson National Sonoran course, designed by Tom Lehman, a more modern, target-style desert course. Both golf courses and the practice facility are within walking-distance of the 167-room resort.
