BERMUDA -- Charles Blair Macdonald, a founding father of golf in America, is a hot name these days, thanks to the opening of Old Macdonald, a tribute course designed by Tom Doak and Jim Urbina at Bandon Dunes Resort in Oregon.
Many of the world's great Macdonald courses are private -- like Shoreacres near Chicago and National Golf Links in New York. The Old White at The Greenbrier is the only true public course designed by Macdonald, but another great opportunity to experience his handiwork comes at The Mid Ocean Club in Bermuda.
The private club, dating to 1921, accepts public play on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The 6,548-yard par-71 course delivers fabulous ocean views, but it's Macdonald's playful use of the rolling topography that seizes the day. The fourth fairway climbs to a crest, revealing the fifth tee, home to a heroic Cape hole that tempts players to take on a lake. A photo hanging in the clubhouse shows a despondent Babe Ruth, who is said to have lost a dozen balls on the hole during a competition. The modern world has encroached on the design -- several roads cut through the back nine -- but this is still pure classic golf at its best.
