Brittany Lincicome captures first major in Kraft Nabisco Championship at Mission Hills C.C.
Brittany Lincicome sank a four-foot eagle putt on the 72nd hole of regulation to capture her first LPGA major in Sunday's Kraft Nabisco Championship in Rancho Mirage, Calif.
Lincicome set up her winning putt by hitting a hybrid to within four feet of the cup after a solid tee shot on Mission Hills Country Club's Dinah Shore Tournament Course.
"I can't even describe it. It's surreal," Lincicome told reporters. "Huge shot on 18 and I'm standing over (it), the hybrid is in my hands; my hands are shaking and my heart is racing. I'm trying to calm myself down by breathing or singing or whatever I can possibly do, and right when I hit it, it came off on the clubface exactly where we wanted to hit it and took the slope like I wanted it to and came really close, thank God."
Lincicome, who was two shots off the pace entering the final round, shot a 3-under-par 69 in the final round, which was enough to top best friend Kristy McPherson and 11-time LPGA Tour winner Cristie Kerr by a single stroke. The 23-year-old Lincicome finished the tournament at 9-under-par 279, earning her, her father Tom and caddie Tara Bateman the right to make the traditional leap into Poppy's Pond.
The $300,000 victory moved Lincicome into the top 10 on the 2009 LPGA money list. The Florida native also became the second-youngest Kraft Nabisco Championship winner behind Morgan Pressel in 2007, at the age of 23 years, six months, 17 days.
