Get a taste of the LPGA Tour at Ko Olina Golf Club on Oahu, Hawaii
KO OLINA, Oahu, Hawaii -- The LPGA Tour just can't get enough of Ko Olina Golf Club.
The LOTTE Championship is the third women's professional tour event at Ko Olina since the 6,815-yard course opened in 1990. Beth Daniel won the 1990 Hawaiian Ladies Open, the first of six Hawaiian Ladies Opens held on the Ted Robinson design. The Fields Open had a three-year run that began in 2006, highlighted by Paula Creamer's 2008 victory. Japanese golfer Ai Miyazato captured the 2012 LOTTE Championship, which returns in April 2013 for a second edition.
The golf course, which also hosted the 1992 Ko Olina Senior PGA Invitational won by Chi Chi Rodriguez, looks spectacular on TV. Its man-made waterfalls decorate three holes: the par 3s at No. 8 and No. 12 and the dramatic par-4 finishing hole. The women love its shot-making demands, which are enhanced when the trade winds blow.
When asked last year if Ko Olina Golf Club was designed for top players, Cristie Kerr responded: "Yeah, I think it is. You have to definitely control your ball flight. ... You have to really control the shape of your shots. When it's windy, it's definitely more creative (to play)."
After the round, every golfer should splurge on lunch or dinner at the fabulous Roy's Restaurant next to the Ko Olina clubhouse.
