Historic Donald Ross Course at French Lick Resort recalls golf's glory days
FRENCH LICK, Ind. -- The Donald Ross Course at French Lick Resort opened in 1920, and Walter Hagen won the 1924 PGA Championship here.
Most tees are elevated, as are nearly every Bermuda-grass green. As a result, nearly every approach requires at least one more club (often two) than the yardage would otherwise dictate. The fairways resemble roller-coasters, undulating so dramatically that one wonders at the stamina and strength that caddies must have possessed in pre-cart days.
Extensive renovations within the past few years have brought it as close to the original Donald Ross design as its been since 1920: all the tee boxes are new, more than 30 bunkers have been brought back, and many greens have been squared off. The result: wonderful views and no easy two putts from anywhere outside of 6 feet. After your round, enjoy a cold drink at the same clubhouse bar where Al Capone once held court.
