The Experience at Koele takes golfers up into the towering pine forests of Lanai, one of the smallest islands in Hawaii. It's 45 minutes from Maui and a whole other world away. That may be part of what drew big-name designer Greg Norman to come up with the plans for The Experience at Koele, along with Ted Robinson. In some ways, it's almost like the pair designed two different golf courses.
The front nine of Koele winds through largely level ground, by big houses in sometimes hot temperatures. The back nine, on the other hand, goes up high into cool forest and features a number of forced carries over tree-filled canyons, shots through narrow openings and big drops to the green. None more jaw-dropping than No. 17, a par 4 with a tee that seems like it's set in the sky.
