Ai Miyazato wins the 2009 Evian Masters in France
Ai Miyazato of Japan won the 2009 Evian Masters this past weekend in Evian-les-Bains, France. With a birdie on the first playoff hole, Miyazato finished with 14-under for her first pro victory. She just barely beat Sophie Gustafson who had a chance to win on the 18th hole but she missed a birdie putt from the edge of the green.
After the second round, Miyazato was tied for the lead with Becky Brewerton and Na Yeon Choi, last year's runner up. Although Miyazato lost the lead in the third round, she regained it triumphantly after starting the playoffs with a strong tee shot down the fairway. Yeon Choi finished eighth and Brewerton tied for 13th. Michelle Wie tied for 23rd with 5-under, a disappointing finish since she was not able to collect any points in her bid for a place on the U.S. team for the Solheim Cup match against Europe in August.
Miyazato's victory also made her the first Japanese woman to win the Evian Masters since Hiromi Kobayashi in 1997, who coincidentally also won on the playoff hole.
