Take on hills and iguanas at El Conquistador Golf Club in Puerto Rico
Located on the rolling and lush northwest side of Puerto Rico is El Conquistador Golf Club, part of the luxury Waldorf Astoria Resort.
The golf course, designed by Arthur Hills, opened in 1993. Set on more than 200 feet of elevation change, few shots are played to the same elevation twice. The course is awash in elevated tees, which offer views of the Caribbean Sea and El Yunque National Rainforest, including both the first and 10th tees, which are located near the perched clubhouse location. The course plays 6,746 yards from the championship tees but remains one of the more difficult challenges on the island, though there are three other sets of tees playing as little as 4,939 yards.
In addition to rolling hills and a handful of water hazards, El Conquistador is also full of iguanas, which find their way onto the fairways and bunkers from time to time. Never fear, they are harmless and generally timid, and they make for a most unusual spectator to island golfers.
