The Great White Course at Doral Golf Resort & Spa in Miami, Florida: A fun challenge by Greg Norman
MIAMI - There was a time when the Great White Course at the Doral Golf Resort & Spa, a Marriott Resort, had too many razor sharp teeth.
When it first opened in 2000, Greg Norman's unique layout devoured golfers with its combination of crushed-shell waste bunkers, water hazards and severely elevated greens. But Norman returned in 2005 to defang the course, notably the severe sixth green and the 15th hole, a move that narrowed the gap between the Great White and the resort's famed TPC Blue Monster.
The 7,171-yard Great White begins and ends with forgiving par 5s, so take advantage. In between are some scary shots, especially the tee shots over water on the par-4 third, the par-4 ninth and the par-3 16th. The 434-yard ninth plays to a sliver of a green skinnier than a necktie.
The Great White might be the most scenic of Doral's golf courses, too. "When the wind blows, I think this course is tougher than the Blue," said Darrin Helfrick, the resort's director of golf.
