The Jack Nicklaus course at Dismal River Club: More great golf in the Sandhills of Nebraska
MULLEN, Neb. -- The Dismal River Club's Nicklaus Course is unlike any golf course in the world. While it takes advantage of the incredible characteristics of the Sandhills of Nebraska like the highly regarded Sand Hills Golf Club just a few miles away, they couldn't be more different despite sharing similar topography.
First off, the private Dismal River Club, as the name implies, is near the Dismal River. And the architects for both courses laid out completely different styles. While Sand Hills Golf Club was designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, Dismal River's first course (a new Doak Course has been built and will open in 2013) was crafted by Jack Nicklaus, and it's unlike anything Nicklaus has done before or since.
Nicklaus took advantage of the large dunes, creating some holes that play a little more like standard American golf, while others have distinct links characteristics. Throughout, you'll find bunkers that were either simply discovered in the terrain or made to look like they were always there.
In short, Dismal River, with its expansive rustic clubhouse, outdoor fire pit and unpretentious atmosphere, is an unforgettable destination, well worth the trouble of finding if you're lucky enough to garner an invitation.
