Delaware Springs Golf Course in Burnet: A Texas Hill Country gem

BURNET, Texas -- It may be a "hidden gem" to national audiences, but golfers in the Texas Hill Country know Delaware Springs Golf Course quite well.

Owned by the City of Burnet, it's one of the best municipal layouts in Texas and is regularly among the top-rated courses in the state on Golf Advisor despite it's low green fee.

I named it as one of my 10 favorite U.S. courses under $50 and the price tag is often well below that in the afternoons or weekdays.

The course was designed by the team of Dave Axeland and Dan Proctor. While not as well known as some nationally recognized architects, they have designed top-100 course Wild Horse in Nebraska, and have also shaped many courses for the Bill Coore & Ben Crenshaw design firm.

Delaware Springs is a lot of fun to play, especially some of the short par 4s and risk-reward par 5s. The greens are sneaky tough and often as fast as any private club in the area.

Complete with friendly service and a great practice area, the facility really is the total package, with perhaps its only shortcoming being that it's a little too far from Austin to be a regular play for its residents. But I'll be sure to make the trek out here more often, and perhaps combine it with a trip to Inks Lake State Park.
