Golf and much more at the Coeur D'Alene Resort in northern Idaho

Located on the shores of Lake Coeur D'Alene in northern Idaho, Coeur D'Alene Resort has been a fixture of this summertime outdoors hotbed since its opening in 1986. Its most famous for the island green at the golf course, a hole which sits entirely out into the lake and requires a short boat ride to reach from the mainland.

The rest of the Coeur D'Alene golf course has many remarkable attributes as well. It's a traditional design by Scott Miller and is walkable with a caddie. Or groups can take a cart with a forecaddie. Several holes -- not just the island green -- play along the lake, and most holes are within view of it, while others play through tall pine trees.

Resort guests not only reach the island green by boat, but they also access the course via speed boat, which is the fastest way to get there (otherwise, the entrance to the course is several miles away). In the last several years, the hotel has renovated and upgraded most of its amenities, from tripling the size of its fitness center to completely redesigning the lobby.

Guest rooms in the main tower have large, private balconies, sunken living areas and beds overlooking the lake. A spa was also added, which features a variety of treatments that culminate with a most refreshing, 15-point, temperature-fluctuating shower sequence.
