MARICOPA, Ariz. -- Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club is spread across more than 320 acres, nearly twice the land of a typical golf course, that was transformed from flat terrain into a rich landscape of tumbling elevations.
In place of cacti, you'll find a variety of tropical trees and plants. It's a departure from the mostly desert layouts you'll find in the area but one thing they do have in common is sand. There are more than 120 bunkers strategically placed throughout, which you would probably expect of a course where Fred Couples played a role. He and the Schmidt-Curley team designed the layout, incorporating ideas from some of the world's most famous courses.
Some holes at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes have a Mid-Atlantic feel while others wouldn't be out of place in South Carolina or coastal California, yet the course still flows seamlessly from one hole to the next. The challenging design has multi-tiered greens and fairways lined with native grasses but the generous landing areas make the layout accessible for players of all skill levels.
There is only one water feature but it has been deftly incorporated into the 10th and 18th holes.
