The 2011 Solheim Cup at Killeen Castle golf course was one for the ages
COUNTY MEATH, Ireland -- Some are already calling the 2011 Solheim Cup at Killeen Castle, located just outside Dublin, the best tournament since the event launched in 1990. The underdog Europeans won the Sunday singles 7-5 to win the Cup 15-13, their first victory in the event since 2003. The Americans won the event in 2005, 2007 and 2009.
The Killeen Castle golf course, designed by Jack Nicklaus on rolling Irish countryside, provided excellent theater, especially its closing holes.
Water plays a big part at the par-3 16th and the par-4 17th. The 18th hole climbs to an elevated green in the shadow of the castle.
The Europeans made all the shots when it counted Sunday at the final hole. Suzann Pettersen made a birdie to beat Michelle Wie, 1-up, and Caroline Hedwall stiffed an iron shot that earned a critical half-point against Ryann O'Toole.
Europe's Laura Davies, who has played in every Solheim Cup, called it "the most exciting one by far."
