The U.S. Team jumped out to an early lead Sunday Aug. 24 on the heels of singles victories by Angela Stanford, Paula Creamer and Michelle Wie.
Stanford got on the board first for the Americans on Sunday, claiming a 5 and 4 victory over Becky Brewerton. Creamer followed shortly after with a 3 and 2 victory over Suzann Pettersen to give the U.S. Team an early 10-8 lead. Wie then took a 1 up victory over 2007 European Captain Helen Alfredsson after halving the 18th hole with birdies.
The 2009 RICOH Women's British Open champion Catriona Matthew followed with the first point of the day for the Europeans after a 3 and 2 victory over Kristy McPherson, and soon thereafter Brittany Lang made birdie on the 18th hole to halve her match with 11-time European Team member Laura Davies. Davies entered the hole 1 up on Lang.
Brittany Lincicome put the U.S. Team in the win column for the fourth time on Sunday with a 3 and 2 victory over Sophie Gustafson to give the Americans a 12 1/2 - 10 lead and Juli Inkster followed by halving her match with Gwladys Nocera, who started the 18th hole 1 down to Inkster. Inkster's half point put the U.S. Team one point from retaining the Cup.
Diana Luna put the second full point on the board for the Europeans with a 3 and 2 victory over Nicole Castrale, moving the tally to 13-11. Morgan Pressel retained the Solheim Cup for U.S. Team with a 3 up victory over Anna Nordqvist, keeping the Americans' undefeated record on home soil intact. Pressel and Nordqvist both hit their tee balls in the rough on the par-3 16th hole, but Nordqvist chipped to 8 feet and missed her par putt, while Pressel chipped to 2 feet and had her par putt conceded to give the Americans a 14-11 lead to clinch the 2009 Solheim Cup.
Three matches remained on the course after the Americans clinched the Cup, the first of which finished when Christina Kim earned a 2 up victory over European Team rookie Tania Elosegui. Natalie Gulbis and Janice Moodie entered the tee box at 18 all square and, after hitting their tee shots, they conceded the next shot to each other, thus halving the holes and the match.
The final match of the day ended when Cristie Kerr and Maria Hjorth halved their match, thus giving the U.S. Team a 16-12 victory over the Europeans.
