Spinella wins Dalhousie Junior Championship with course record

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. -- Ty Spinella of Aledo, Texas, won the Boys Division after carding a competitive course record, 5-under-par 67, giving him a 4-under-par 212 tournament total. Katie Sylvan of San Diego won the Girls Division by one stroke after posting a 12-over-par 228.

Conducted by the AJGA, the Dalhousie Junior Championship was a 54-hole stroke play event held at Dalhousie Golf Club. The 144-player field featured players from 28 states and Canada. The course was played as a 6,970-yard par 72 for the Boys Division and a 6,063-yard par 72 in the Girls Division.

After coming into the final round three strokes behind Wednesday’s leader, Spinella said his plan was to get off to a good start early. He made three birdies on the front nine, posting a 2-under-par 34 and four birdies on the back nine giving him 3-under-par 33.

“I knew I had to attack the flagsticks and make my putts,” Spinella said. “There are plenty of birdies out there.”

With a brand new set of irons and a good strategy, Spinella said he had a lot of motivation and gave it all he had on the course to win his first AJGA event.

Second-place awards were given to Tyler Mitchell of Cadiz, Ky., and William Hunt of Paducah, Ky., posting 3-over-par 219 tournament totals. Coming in fourth was Drew Miller of Clarksville, Tenn., shooting a 4-over-par 220. In fifth place was Anthony Aicher of Wausau, Wis., coming in with a 5-over-par 221.

Approaching No. 18, Sylvan was two strokes behind the leader, Emma Talley, when she made a long chip for birdie. A gallery of about 50 people cheered loudly as Sylvan stole the lead.

“The adrenaline helped get my tempo going and kept me patient,” Sylvan said. “It feels good to win. There was so much support in Cape Girardeau.” Sylvan birdied Nos. 1 and 18 and said after a few bad putts on the front nine, she told herself to focus after the turn. She finished the back nine 1-under-par 35. This is Sylvan’s second AJGA win.

Coming in second place was Talley of Princeton, Ky., carding a 13-over-par 229 tournament total. Finishing third in the Girls Division was Stephanie Wagstaff of Asheville, N.C., firing a 15-over-par 231.
