AJ McInerney and Michele Chun capture wins at Junior All-Star

LAKE HAVASU CITY, Ariz. -- AJ McInerney of Henderson, Nev., capitalized on a five-stroke lead heading into Thursday’s final round to win the Boys Division of the American Junior Golf Association’s Junior All-Star at Lake Havasu firing 3-under-par 67-69-74—210. In the Girls Division, Michele Chun of Ontario, Calif., took a seven stroke lead into the final round and won by six strokes at 7-over-par 71-71-78--220.

Conducted by the AJGA, The Junior All-Star at Lake Havasu was a 54-hole stroke play event featuring 63 boys and 17 girls ages 12-15. Included in the 80-player field were 36 juniors from California and 15 from Arizona. The Boys Division played from tees set at 6,757 yards and the Girls Division played from 5,960 yards.

McInerney took the lead after a first-round score of 4-under-par 67 and never looked back. He was the only player to shoot under 70 in each of the first two rounds, but McInerney said his comfortable lead did not affect his play Thursday.

“The competition was really good this week and I tried not to think about the lead,” McInerney said. “I just tried to make as many birdies as I could, especially in the tough conditions today.”

John Varol of Weddington, N.C., finished in second place in the Boys Division at even-par 213. Tied for third at 2-over-par were Yuki Kato of Las Vegas, Cody Kent of Castle Rock, Colo., Shuai Wu of Beijing, China, Alberto Sanchez of Nogales, Ariz., and John Young Kim of Cypress, Calif.

In the Girls Division, Chun’s final round score was still the third best on the day despite carding a score seven shots higher than she had the two previous rounds. Chun said it was her mental game that kept her at the top of the leaderboard.

“I had to stick to my pre-shot routine because the conditions were so windy today,” Chun said. “I know I can’t control what my competitors do, so I just had to really focus on my own game.”

Rounding out the top three in the Girls Division were Marissa Chow of Honolulu with a three-day total of 226 and Alison Lee of Valencia, Calif., at 228.
