PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – Andrew Kim of Old Tappan, N.J., maintained his lead to win with a 6-under-par 210 after the final round of the Junior All-Star at PGA National Thursday. In the Girls Division, A.J. Newell of Tampa, Fla., finished at 8-over-par 224. For both Kim and Newell, this event marks their first-ever victories with the AJGA.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Junior All-Star at PGA National was a 54-hole stroke play event held at PGA National Resort & Spa – Haig Course. The 82-player field featured players from 17 states and Canada. The course was played at 5,856 yards in the Girls Division and 6,640 yards in the Boys Division.
Kim set the bar high with his first two rounds of the tournament, posting a 9-under-par 63 and 3-under-par 69, respectively. His first round Tuesday established a new junior course record at PGA National's Haig Course. He said that his final round was rough but that his two-day lead helped him relax in the final round.
"This tournament gave me confidence that I can play with the best juniors around," Kim said. "I learned how to finish with a big lead."
Blake Olson of Pensacola, Fla., finished second, recording a 1-under-par 215. John Boehme of Jacksonville Beach, Fla., claimed third place with a tournament total of even-par 216. Also in the Boys Division, McKeehanon Rue of Athens, Tenn., and Blake Biddle of St. Charles, Ill., tied for fourth with 2-over-par 218s.
In the Girls Division, Newell birdied five holes to shoot 31 on the front nine – her lowest ever nine-hole score – and brought the round home with a 2-over-par 74 to win the tournament.
"It feels really good to play my first event and win," Newell said. "Now when I go to more tournaments, I know I can win them."
Karen Chung of Livingston, N.J., shot an 11-over-par 227 tournament total for second place. Annie Park of Levittown, N.Y., followed close behind in third with a 13-over-par 229 total for the week.
