PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Dec. 14, 2004 – The 2004 PGA Tour season is a memorable story, indeed. The focal point was the remarkable season of Player of the Year Vijay Singh, whose rise from the ranks as an assistant club professional on the South Pacific island of Fiji to becoming the world’s No. 1-ranked golfer is incredible in its own right.
Known for his unrelenting dedication on the practice range, Singh produced one of the greatest seasons in Tour history, winning nine times, collecting more than $10 million in prize money and supplanting Tiger Woods as the sport’s No. 1-ranked player, a feat some might consider the most impressive of all.
But Singh’s was just one of many great storylines in 2004, as portrayed in "A Storybook Season Presented by FedEx," a one-hour NBC special that airs on Dec. 26 at 3 p.m. ET.
There was, of course, Phil Mickelson’s first major championship victory at the Masters Tournament, and Todd Hamilton’s breakthrough as a 38-year-old rookie -- following his Honda Classic win with a playoff victory over Ernie Els at the British Open.
There also was Australian Adam Scott, who became the youngest Players Championship winner at age 24, and John Daly’s emotional return to the winner’s circle after a nine-year drought at the Buick Invitational.
Produced by PGA Tour Productions and hosted by Mark Rolfing, "A Storybook Season Presented by FedEx" chronicles these stories, following their unique paths to the common ground of becoming PGA Tour champions.
For Singh, it was reaffirmation of his dedication and strong desire to become the best. For Mickelson, it was casting out the demons of near misses in major championships with the perfect triumph. For Hamilton, it was following a path from a small Illinois town through the Pacific Rim as a journeyman professional before bursting onto the scene with two unexpected victories. And for Daly, it was rediscovering a game of brute power and impressive short game finesse that had produced two major championships and built a massive legion of fans.
"The show captures the essence of the PGA Tour ... that is, each year so many player's stories of success are unique," said Stu Nicol, PGA Tour Productions vice president and executive producer. "Phil Mickelson's triumph in winning his first major, Todd Hamilton's life long pursuit to earn his PGA Tour card reaps 'overnight' success at the age of 38 and Vijay Singh's legendary work ethic and relentless pursuit of excellence earns him the number one ranking in the world."
Relive these memorable moments in A Storybook Season Presented by FedEx.
