Architect, designer collaborate on new treasures for Twin Farms

BARNARD, VT. – Dec. 14, 2004 – One of the most prestigious resorts in the world, Twin Farms in Barnard, Vermont, will expand its guest accommodations by 30 percent between now and May 2005, reports Michael Beardsley, General Manager.

“Demand continues to grow for the level of privacy, understated elegance and serenity that have become synonymous with our 11-year-old resort,” says Beardsley. Guests of this romantic hideaway enjoy the use of a handsome pub, full fitness center, exclusive Out of the Woods spa facility, and Japanese-style furo, four seasons of on-site recreation including downhill and cross country skiing, mountain biking, hiking, and fly-fishing as well as outstanding cuisine and fine wines all included in the base rates.

Room rates range from $1,050 to $2,600 per night for two people and remain consistent throughout the year. Established in 1993, Twin Farms presently offers 15 guest accommodations with six suites in the Main House and Lodge, and nine free-standing individually themed cottages dotted about the 300 acres of fields, forests, and gardens. The Aviary, a cottage created by architect Peter Bohlin and interior designer Thad Hayes will open in January of the New Year. The Aviary, a two story structure, soars upward from the surrounding hardwood trees, a marvel of glass, stone and massive cedar timber.

“Aviary is about the simple pleasures of life,” says Beardsley. Approximately 1000 square feet, The Aviary features a sunken tub before a fieldstone fireplace in the bedroom and a lavishly appointed bathroom and entry on the first level. The second floor sitting room with woodstove, writing desk, television and screened porch provides a cozy retreat for quiet reflection while also creating the feeling of safe harbor for its human fledglings. Floor-to-ceiling windows provide delightful leafy vistas that create an ever-evolving palette of natural art as a backdrop to the interior design of Thad Hayes. Hayes’ sumptuous and playful fittings create an environment of unparalleled romance and comfort, the very ultimate of luxury.

By May 2005 Bohlin and Hayes will also have put finishing touches on The Farmhouse at Copper Hill, a four-suite sanctuary boasting breathtaking views that telescope across the valley. The complex will consist of two 2-suite cottages joined by a library and lounge building complete with entertainment center, wet bar and enormous native field stone fireplace. Each suite will have its own private, as well as communal entry allowing the accommodations to be booked individually or by groups of two to four couples traveling together. The views here may be the best of any at Twin Farms, with Mount Ascutney 60 miles to the south perfectly framed between the hills while below is Copper Pond, an 8-acre spring-fed pond complete with cabana, canoes and dory. The stone terrace with eight-person Jacuzzi takes full advantage of the view as well as its perfect location for late night relaxing under the constellations.

Says Beardsley, “These new dwellings allow Twin Farms to continue our tradition of amazing our clients with a combination of wit, luxury, seclusion and pampering that is perhaps unparalleled in the industry.” Twin Farms itself is a virtual gallery of 20th century art, a collection amassed by its owner and founder, Thurston Twigg-Smith, now retired as one of the country’s leading newspaper publishers. Guests live with the art, imported and antique textiles, solid silver table lamps and a list of stylistic accoutrements specific to each dwelling and public area.

In his early 80s, Mr. Twigg-Smith travels frequently between his home in Hawaii to Twin Farms to work with architects, designers and landscapers on the new projects as well as spending time at Twin Farms as both an owner and a fan. Coming on the scene in 1993, Twin Farms was the first fully inclusive resort of its kind in the country and has continued to amaze its clientele and the critics as the forerunner of luxury, seclusion and elegance in an unpretentious and relaxed atmosphere. The Exxon-Mobil Travel Guide recently awarded Twin Farms its prestigious Five-Star award for the 10th consecutive year. The Zagat Survey consistently gives stellar ratings, including #1 U.S. Inn. Andrew Harper’s Hideaway Report has declared Twin Farms a Grand Award Winner and Hideaway of the year.

The resort is closed for the month of April each year during Vermont’s traditional “mud” and sugaring seasons! Twin Farms is served by small aircraft at an airport in West Lebanon, NH, approximately 30 minutes from Barnard, and by the larger international airports of Burlington, VT, and Manchester, NH.
