MELBOURNE – Dec. 13, 2004 – European Tour Member Richard Green finally enjoyed the taste of victory in 2004 when he has sunk a four-foot birdie putt on the first play-off hole to capture the $225,000 first prize in a dramatic conclusion to the 2004 MasterCard Masters at Huntingdale Golf Club in Melbourne.
Overnight leader David McKenzie together with the left-handed duo of Greg Chalmers and Green all finished at 17 under par 271, Green booking his place in the shoot-out with a final round 67.
The trio all headed back down the 18th from where Chalmers found the trees on the right, but produced a brilliant recovery to land on the green. McKenzie's second fell short of the target, but they were both outdone by Green, who finished second three times on The European Tour in 2004 on his way to 17th place on the Order of Merit.
From the fairway, the winner of the 1997 Dubai Desert Classic rifled a superb second shot close to the pin and calmly holed the four foot putt for his first major win on the Australasian tour.
Earlier, Bradley Hughes came down the 18th with a one stroke lead over the field at 18 under par, but sent his tee shot right and was forced to take a penalty drop for an unplayable lie.
Playing his third, the shot left Hughes a difficult chip to the green and he put it 12 feet short of the pin. Needing to sink the putt to join the play-off, his putt slipped by the hole and so did his chances of a third victory in the event. His double bogey six left him in a tie for fourth at 16 under par 272 with European Tour Member Brad Kennedy (69) and Steven Bowditch who finished with a 68.
