Every August the women’s British Open rolls around, and every August I ask the same question: when are they going to play the Old Course?

I guess all that shouting at the television finally paid off: this August, the women’s British Open will be played, for the first time, at venerable St. Andrews.

The men’s competition has been decided there 27 times; for women, it’s a first. Of course, considering that the women’s British Open has only been a major since 2001, whereas the men’s has been around since 1860, I guess the Old Course isn’t that far behind the curve. But this is actually the first women’s pro event ever held on the Old Course. On a course with a 600-year history, I must say, it’s about time.

And, oh yeah, we don’t have to call it the “Weetabix Women’s British Open” anymore, since the breakfast cereal sponsor has been replaced with Japanese office supplier Ricoh. “Sad news,” notes blogger Mullingan Stu, “for lovers of the fact that three of the four women’s majors have food products in their names.”

Will Ricoh let us just call it the Women’s Open Championship? Not likely.
