Father and Son Tournament won by John and Jonathan Shamon

St ANDREWS, Scotland -- The Sixth Annual Father and Son Tournament, held in St Andrews Scotland, was won by John Shamon from South Carolina and his son, Jonathan Shamon from Washington.

John, from Okatie, SC and Jonathan Shamon from Duvall, WA finished on 155 points, when playing to three- quarters of their respective 8 and 13 handicaps in a better ball stableford competition. Scores of 40 on the New Course, 41 on Kingsbarns, 33 on Crail, (Balcomie Links), and 41* *on the Old Course won them the title by 2 points.

A strong start on the New Course on the opening day saw the Shamon’s finish the day in a four way tie for 3^rd place. A score of 41 points on the second day at Kingsbarns was enough for them to move into second place, 2 points behind the leaders, South African duo Tommie & Ronaldo Scholtz.

The Balcomie Links at Crail proved an easier course for many, with the top score posted for the day being 43 points, however the Shamon’s struggled and their score of 33 points saw them overtaken by the English pair, Robert & Paul Godfrey and finish the day tied for 3^rd place alongside the German team of Hans and Thomas Luer.

At the start of the final round on the Old Course, all was still to play for with only 4 points separating the top 5 teams. The American teams dominated the Old Course with Jim & Ryan Kelly, from Maryland, the Shamon’s and Fred & Fred Jnr Losch from Illinois making up the top three teams for the days round. In addition, Jim Kelly won the best Scratch (74) prize, and Fred Losch Jnr picked up the best handicap prize with a Net 71. However it was the round of 41 points which saw the Shamon’s moved into first place overall and take the title by 2 points.

Second place went to Jim & Ryan Kelly who finished on 153 points and Robert & Paul Godfrey from the United Kingdom finished 3^rd after a count-back.

The competition was held over 5 days and over the six years it has been taking place, competitors from 18 different countries have competed over the famous links courses.
