BRAINERD, Minn. -- Madden’s on Gull Lake will honor the memory of golf great and long time friend Patty Berg in the First Annual Parent/Child golf tournament on their original course, Pine Beach East, May 25-27, 2007.
Miss Berg, who died in September 2006, was a frequent guest at the Robert’s Hotel (now Madden Inn & Golf Club) in the late 1930’s when the future founding president of the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) was shaping her game.
“I’d go to Madden’s,“ she said, “to recharge my batteries, usually a few days before a tournament. I don’t know how many times I was a guest at Madden’s, but on certain occasions, I thought of it as a sort of second home.”
Patty, a longtime friend of Jim Madden from their college days at the University of Minnesota, went on to win 28 amateur golf tournaments, 60 pro events, and a record 15 LPGA major championships. She was inducted into more than a dozen Halls of Fame and, in 1949, became a charter member of the LPGA.
“It is because of their close friendships here and her missionary zeal for the game of golf that we are honoring Patty,” said Brian Thuringer, President of Madden’s on Gull Lake. “She was particularly interested in introducing children to the game as a healthy form of family recreation and we hope our Parent/Child event will mirror that for years to come.”
Madden’s Memorial Day weekend tournament is designed for golfers of all ages and abilities. Divisions will include Father & Child Junior (18 and younger) and Senior (19 and older) and Mother & Child Junior and Senior, same age categories.
