The MacKenzie Golf Bag Company (TMGBC), whose products have generated a cult following of walking golfers at many of America’s most prestigious clubs, has resumed production of its beloved MacKenzie Walker. The golf bag, originally designed by PGA touring professional Peter Jacobsen, has long been a favorite of traditionalists, caddies, and other golfers who appreciate a simple approach to the Royal and Ancient Game. And that approach includes walking.
During a hiatus in which no new products were made for several years, demand for MacKenzie golf bags reached cult status among golf purists, especially club pros and old-school players at traditional clubs. TMGBC has resumed handcrafting buttery leather golf bags and accessories in Portland, Oregon, where they have been hand-sewn since 1985.
Todd Rohrer, new owner and president of the company is a ten-year veteran of the golf industry, with a background in management, marketing, and sales. He also claims to hit a pretty good draw for an executive. As an unabashed fan of tradition, Rohrer bought the company he long admired because he loved the product and recognized its obsessively strong following.
MacKenzie Walkers are handcrafted from domestic full-grain leather. In an era when most golf products emphasize their high-tech pedigree, MacKenzie Golf Bags continue to carry golf clubs, balls, and other bare necessities, with elegant simplicity. The bag design has been refined by upgrades in hardware and internal structure, but the products are still handcrafted one at a time—and personalized with an embroidered name or club logo—by artisans in Portland.
The MacKenzie Golf Bag Company also produces leather golf accessories, such as head covers, shag bags, valuables pouches, and shoe bags. Clients of the company include many of the best golf clubs in North America, such as Crystal Downs, National Golf Links, Whisper Rock Golf Club, and Waverley Country Club.
TMGBC is s supporter of the Evans Foundation, the Shivas Irons Society, and other organizations and programs that promote walking, caddies, and youth golf.
